The Spring Valley Fire Department was started around 1884, being incorporated as part of the city in 1886.  We are an all volunteer department, a member of MABAS Division 25 and have a Class 5 insurance ratiing.  The first home for the department was the Spring Valley City Hall building in 1894, moving in 1979 to our current location on Taylor Street.  The new building was built from Federal Grants.  Until 2007 all of our calls were dispatched from the city hall, we are currently dispatched from Bureau County 911 Center (BUECOMM).  Spring Valley is the second largest community in Bureau County, Illinois, and a gateway to the Illinois River.  Spring Valley is located approximately 100 miles west and south of Chicago.

We currently have 32 active members with 4 Junior Rookies.  Our Junior Rookie program allows High School Junior and Seniors to learn about the Fire Service by attending trainings, work nights and assist at fire scenes helping with non-fire fighting duties until the age of 18.  We have just started a Mentor Program to go along with the Rookie Program and to assist Rookies (new to the department and 18yrs of age) with becoming Probationary Fireman.
